.Hey Whoopie.

Following our homage to Americana treats, we explore the mystery that is part cake, part cookie pretending to be a pie, the infamous Whoopie Pies.  With its origins shrouded in controversy the construction sure wasn't which simply involved a sweet cream filling sandwiched between two cake rounds.

Beckoned by my non-existent willpower and those awfully delicious instagram photos, I decided to visit the Whoopie dessert bar, brainchild of pastry chef Lucy Stuart and foodie Nick Maddren.  The bar's hip & creative fit-out boasts a free wifi/ ipad station and doubles as an ice cream parlour!

.The Whoopie Dessert Bar on Nuffield Street.
The whoopies are freshly baked from their Grey Lynn branch aka head kitchen with new flavours being invented daily.  Each creation is named after 'playful' adjectives like Luscious, Heroic and Mighty.  So it was purely a coincidence when I picked out...

 .Wicked.
White velvet and passionfruit
Loved the intensity of the passionfruit as it enveloped my taste buds!  The cake was decadent yet light at the same time.  My favourite out of the three.

.Crazy.
Chocolate, cherry and coconut
Rich chocolate cake with a hint of sour cherries.  Coconut flakes are whipped into the cream cheese giving each bite a unique texture.

.Crown Jewels.
Milk chocolate ganache and Caramel popcorn
Staying true to its name, it is decorated with a hershey crown topped off with caramel popcorn.  The chocolatey goodness was subtle while the white chocolate chunks in the cake were a happy surprise.

Next on my 'to try' list includes 'Romantic' with rose water, mix berry & cream cheese and 'Brave', black velvet, sesame and mandarin.

The generous portions from Whoopie are probably best enjoyed as a shared treat but some could probably devour a few on their own!  Girls, tread with caution.

Woop woop!
